The DVR'S

Not all DVR’s are alike. We carry over 437 different variations of both embedded and PC based units…directing a client to the best DVR for their application is vital to the operation of the overall system design.

The DVR is the heart of your system and quality should be of paramount concern. The old adage applies here, “you only get what you pay for”. Most commercial systems use JPEG compression. Higher quality systems use MPEG4 compression (see below). Although we carry MPEG4 systems, our most popular systems use H.264 compression which produces outstanding casino grade images. It is cheaper to upgrade cameras than upgrade your DVR. Invest once in a quality DVR.

In addition to quality compression, be sure your system has the ability to remotely view your facility. This means anywhere you can get an internet connection, you can monitor your business. This is a great business management tool.

Do you want to see that the ball was thrown OR do you want to see WHO threw it?

Do you want to see that there was a theft OR do you want to identify the actor?

Remote Viewing
When choosing a DVR, consider the option of “Remote Viewing” (viewing your system online). This option is a great management tool. Absentee owners or owners or managers with multiple locations can view a facility via a password protected internet link.

Our remote view systems use H.264 compression and have an internet control panel similar to the one pictured below. You have the ability to view from 1 camera up to 64 cameras depending on your system.

Other things to consider:

• An embedded unit vs a PC based unit
• JPEG, MPEG4 or H.264
• Do you need motion detection and Masking
• The camera adjustment features
• Do you need a triplex machine?
• The number of remote viewers
• PTZ Control
• The remote viewing experience
• The viewable and recordable frames per second (FPS)
• The size of the hard drive
• The company you buy from and of course the support you will get.

The company should offer you a “loaner” or replacement DVR while your DVR is being repaired or replaced. One of the biggest complaints we hear is that a customer has not been able to contact the original company who sold them their system. These “tail light” guarantees are common. Your system is no good to you if it is not working in optimal condition. Also consider “Service” plans which will cover you for camera and DVR service calls. It is well worth the small investment.

Contact 3i PROTECT for a FREE DVR check list. This will help you think through your DVR requirements. A Security Technician would also be happy to speak to you or visit your site. Simply call 1-800-766-1446 with your questions.
