The Cameras and Lenses

The Cameras
There are many camera options out there and it is best to have a professional help you choose which is best for which application.

Above you see: An outdoor PTZ (Pan-Tilt-Zoom), a Dome, a Box Camera, an infrared Bullet Camera, a Heated/Cooled Housed Camera and a Covert Camera. These are cameras mostly used in commercial applications. There are hundreds of different models and variations of these cameras. Have a professional help you in choosing which camera best suits your environment and application.

There are many choices even among these most popular cameras. One must choose from: Lens type, the lines of resolution, type of Iris, focal length, chip size, mounting type, etc. These options all depend on the environment and your application. The quality of camera should match the quality of your DVR. The system components should match in quality and type. Would you buy cheap speakers for your high-end stereo? Don’t buy cheap cameras for a quality DVR. Your system is only as good as its weakest component.

The Lens
A Sample of different lens options:
Do you want to see that a theft or incident occurred OR
do you want to see who was involved?

Do you want to monitor a parking lot or do you want to read a license plate?

To sum this up, when choosing a camera and lens it is important not to ask a camera to do too many things. It is difficult to monitor and record an entire parking lot and still expect to capture a license plate image. To achieve this objective, two cameras would be better suited…One to capture the lot and one to capture the license plate area. Both cameras require different abilities. Resolution, shutter speed and lens type are three major considerations.

The same thinking applies to capturing images of people. Do you want to capture a gathering or crowd or do you want to capture facial features? Many times multiple images or camera angles will be required.

An example of this would be a camera capturing all the faces entering a retail establishment, a camera angled toward a retail area capturing a theft or event AND an outside parking lot camera capturing the actor getting into a vehicle and leaving the location.

It is best to refer to a system professional for this guidance. It is less expensive to purchase once and get the correct system for your application. Many companies will charge a hefty “restocking” fee if you want to return a system.

We would be happy to asses your site and recommend the correct combination of cameras. Simply call us and one of our technicians will share some information and options with you.
